A bit About this website
"Who the heck is going to read this? It's a mortgage website!" That was the question I asked myself when I set out to write the content on this website. It's a fair point – most financial websites are about as exciting as watching paint dry. Instead, I've decided to write it like something I'd want to read – a little treasure trove of info on mortgages in retirement, written by people who enjoy explaining it. Oh, and with some bad jokes or good poetry thrown in for good measure.
Why We Built It This Way
Most financial websites feel like they're designed to impress other bankers. We built ours, well, differently. The thing is, nobody should have to learn about reverse mortgages while a mortgage broker stares at them from across a desk, or rushes through it all in a phone call. Here, you can explore everything at your own pace, on your own terms.
We know exploring reverse mortgages is a big decision. That's why we've filled this site with real information, not sales pitches. We want you to understand these products as well as we do – because here's the thing: when Canadians actually understand reverse mortgages, they often realize they're a much better option than they first thought.
What You'll Find Here:
Getting to Know Us
Well, look at that - you're already in our About Us section! We've broken this section into bite-sized chapters instead of cramming everything onto one page. We want to make sure you understand not just what we do, but who we are, how we work, and so you can decide if we (and our unorthodox approach to business) are the right fit for you. Take your time exploring each section – we think you'll appreciate our straightforward approach.
The Good Stuff ("Enjoyables")
What do you do with the money after you've unlocked some of your home equity? This is the fun part! I love hearing all the different ways our clients plan to use their equity, so I started writing them down, to share with others. Under the 'Unlock Equity' section, we've written a bunch of articles sharing different things Canadians can use their equity to do, and guides on how to make them happen. Want that winter escape condo in California? We'll walk you through it. Hoping to help the kids (and grandkids) afford to move closer to grandma and grandpa? We'll show you how. These aren't just ideas - they're step-by-step guides on making your retirement bucket list happen.
Honest Answers About Mortgages in Retirement
Looking for answers? The FAQ section (we call it "Frequently Answered Questions" because we actually answer them) of the site is filled with detailed explanations about reverse mortgages, equity take-outs and getting/having mortgages in your retirement. Each answer is a full article that gets straight to what you want to know. Can't find what you're looking for? Just ask – we're always adding new answers based on the questions submitted on this site.
Our Products (No Stress[tests])
This is where we explain our retirement mortgage options the way we'd explain them to friends, not accountants. Whether you're looking at our Payment Optional Mortgages, Reverse Mortgages, or Home Equity Lines of Credit, we explain each option in plain English, focused on what matters to you.
What Makes Us Different
You might notice we're a bit more laid-back than your typical mortgage company. That's intentional. We believe you can be professional without being stuffy, knowledgeable without being condescending, and helpful without being pushy.
Every article, every answer, and every explanation on this site comes from our actual experience helping real Canadians understand and use reverse mortgages. We're not here to pressure you – we're here to help you figure out if a reverse mortgage makes sense for your situation.
A Final Note
Take your time exploring. Read our stories. Check out our answers. Get to know us. We've designed this site to be informative, honest, and maybe even a little entertaining (yes, even when talking about mortgages). And remember – just because we're casual doesn't mean we're not serious about helping you make the right financial decisions for your retirement.
And about that Jimmy Buffett vibe you might be picking up on... yeah, that's my fault, and I’m proud of it! When I decided to shift the company into RetiredMortgages, it was also decided our office culture would be more "Changes in Latitudes" than "Bay Street." Maybe it's because I've got my own dreams of sailing the Caribbean one day, or maybe it's just because Tommy Bahama (sorry Tom, the nickname stuck) and I believe retirement planning should feel more like a conversation at the beach than a lecture in a boardroom. Want to learn more about how this shapes who we are and how we work? Don’t worry – we dig into it a bit more in our "Our Team" and "Our Values" chapters.
