Our Values
(Or "Why We Sleep Well at Night")
Ever wonder why some companies have managed to stick around while others seem to disappear overnight? For us, the answer is pretty simple – always do what's right for the client, not just what's profitable.
That means we'll only ever offer mortgage products we believe in. It means taking the extra time to explain things properly, so our clients are the ones actually making the decision – not just being told what to do. It means always standing behind our word. And most importantly, it means being honest with people, even if it means turning away a client when it's not a good fit.
Pretty simple recipe, but after nearly 50 years, it seems to be working.
The Four-Way Test
Tom and I are both proud members of the Salmon Arm Daybreak Rotary club, and like all good Rotarians, we live by a set rules called the Four-Way Test. If you're not familiar, it's set of simple questions we ask about everything we do:
- Is it the truth?
- Is it fair to all concerned?
- Will it build goodwill and better friendships?
- Will it be beneficial to all concerned?
- Bonus: Will it be fun? (Our club added this one, and honestly, we think it's pretty important)
These aren't just words on a wall - they guide every decision we make. Take commissions, for example - we could make more money by pushing products where the banks pay us the most. But that wouldn't be fair to all concerned, would it? So we don't. Simple.
Embracing Protection (Not Just Rules)
Here's something most people don't expect to hear from me: we actually love how well-regulated reverse mortgages are in Canada. Not because we're fans of paperwork (trust me, we're not), but because these regulations protect our clients. Unlike some of those horror stories you might have heard from south of the border, Canadian reverse mortgages have some rock-solid protections built right in:
- You can never owe more than your home is worth
- You can never be forced to sell or move out
- You always maintain ownership of your home
- Every client must get independent legal advice
The regulations that back these protections aren't just rules we follow - they're protections we believe in. When we know our clients are safe, it makes it easy for us to stand behind what we offer.
The "No Pressure" Promise
We're not into high pressure or quick close sales tactics. Or any sales tactics for that matter. They just don't sit well with us, and kind of muck up the vibe of our office. Our attitude is that if a reverse mortgage is right for you, you'll figure that out on your own time. Our job is to explain how they work, answer all your questions honestly, and help you decide if it's a good fit for your situation.
Sometimes that means telling people a reverse mortgage isn't their best option. And you know what? That's fine by us. We'd rather lose a sale than lose sleep knowing we pushed someone into something that wasn't right for them.
Small Town Values, Coast to Coast (or Why Our Reputation is Everything)
Here's the thing about running a mortgage business in a small town for nearly 50 years - you can't hide. When your clients are your neighbors, when you see them at the hockey rink or bump into them at the grocery store, your reputation is real, and word gets around - good and bad. And you know what? We think that's a good thing. Keeps us honest.
Those small-town values shape everything we do and are exactly how we run RetiredMortgages today. Whether we're helping someone in downtown Toronto or rural Nova Scotia, we bring that same approach - where your reputation matters and doing right by people isn't just good values, it's good business.
That commitment to community runs deep with us. Back home in Salmon Arm, you'll still find us very active in Rotary and local organizations - not because it's good marketing (though it is), but because giving back is just part of who we are. Hard to look your neighbors in the eye if you're not doing your part.
The real test of values isn't what you say - it's what happens over time. When clients recommend us to their friends at coffee group, when we keep getting calls from the same communities, when we're known across Canada for doing things right... that tells us our approach must be working.
