Welcome Aboard!
A few years before Tom and I bought the company that became RetiredMortgages, the VP of our local credit union told us 'you boys are scrupulous in an unscrupulous industry.' We've been working hard to make sure he'd always be willing to say that about us.
The Past:
After all, reputation is everything, and we have a heck of a reputation to uphold. Our company was started by my grandpa back in 1979 – the same year the Sony Walkman came out. Tom's a second-generation mortgage broker (his mom worked with my dad), and I'm now the third generation of Richard Smiths to own the company. When you've got 45 years of people trusting you their homes and their mortgages, you can't take that lightly.
Unplanned:
This company wasn't planned. There never was a business plan written. We've never had a corporate mission statement, or slideshow presentations setting its predetermined outcome. When the banks were focused on standardizing the humanity out of mortgages, we went the other way. We started as a private lending company back when reverse mortgages didn't even exist in Canada. Over the years, we evolved with the market - expanding into mortgage brokering while keeping our lending business, and now focusing on retirement mortgages. The truth is, we never set out to be different – we just refused to let anyone change our vibe or make us act like the banks we were helping clients get ahead of.
We've been successful over the years, and we're thankful for that. Turns out, there are quite a few Canadians who appreciate our no-nonsense, flip-flops-welcome approach to giving mortgage advice. We've grown into something that we think is pretty special, but we've managed to keep our roots and our way of doing things.
We’ll Always Tell The Truth:
Here's the honest truth - we know we're not the right fit for everyone, and that's exactly how we want it. If you're looking for suits & ties, industry jargon, slideshows and someone who is going to tell you everything is great all the time, you might want to try one of the big banks. But if you're okay with straightforward, honest advice, and maybe the occasional Jimmy Buffett reference, you're in the right place. Take a few minutes to read through these pages and get to know how we work. That way, you'll know exactly what to expect when working with us.
